The Division of Transplant Surgery

The UC Davis Transplant Center performs transplants of the kidney, kidney-pancreas and isolated pancreas.

All pediatric and adult patients with end-stage renal failure may be evaluated for access procedures for chronic dialysis. Appropriate candidates also will be considered for living-related, living-unrelated or cadeveric renal transplantation.

An active pancreas transplant patient program has been offered since 1989. Patients with insulin-dependent mellitus and diabetic nephropathy will be considered for combined cadaveric renal and pancreas transplantation. Diabetic recipients of a previous renal transplantation can also be evaluated for sequential pancreas transplantation. Non-uremic diabetics with very difficult-to-control glucose metabolism can be considered for solitary pancreas transplantation.

Stem cell transplantation (formerly called bone marrow transplantation) is offered through the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Hematology and Oncology.

Research continues in the area of transplant immunology and pancreatic islet cell transplantation, and the clinical trial of pancreas islet cell transplantation is planned for the near future.

UC Davis Health System officially closed its liver transplant program on May 1, 2009. While UC Davis no longer performs liver transplant surgeries, transplant specialists continue to provide follow-up care to patients who received their liver transplants at UC Davis before the program closed.
