Welcome to the Department of Urology at the UC Davis School of Medicine and Medical Center. The Department of Urology is committed to providing state of the art medical and surgical care for pediatric and adult urology patients, to providing the best clinical and research education for medical student and residency training and to being at the forefront of basic scientific research, translational research and clinical trials to benefit patient outcomes.

Our department is comprised of urologic surgeons, sub-specializing in every area of urology. We also have a dedicated research staff in the areas of molecular and cell biology, tumor biology, biochemistry and molecular genetics. In addition to clinical trials, we not only treat patients with the latest in clinical technology, but we understand their conditions in the laboratory environment as well. Our expert surgeons work closely with medical oncologists, pediatricians, radiation therapists, and gynecologic surgeons to provide comprehensive care.

Below you will find a list of some of the special services we offer to include surgery for aggressive and locally advance urologic tumors such as renal cell carcinoma with inferior vena cava extension, bladder removal with continent urinary diversion, reconstructive surgery of the urinary tract, complex urinary incontinent surgery, minimally invasive and robotic surgery, stone and reconstructive surgery to name a few. Please take a look at our educational and research objectives, and view the excellent credentials and outstanding reputation of our faculty. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if we may provide you with help in answering your questions about our clinical or research services.

Overview

The Department of Urology offers comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services for adult and pediatric urological conditions. Urinary incontinence is treated through pharmacologic and surgical means. Expert surgeons, medical oncologists and radiation therapists cooperate in the treatment of urological cancers. Patients with kidney stones are treated with minimally invasive stone removal techniques and medically evaluated to determine risk factors for recurrent stone formations. Physicians evaluate and manage erectile dysfunction using medical and surgical measures. Male infertility is addressed through testicular biopsy, vasograms, seminal vesiculograms, vasovasostomy, and vaseoepididymostomy. Special services include:

A strong research component drives the department, and active participation on national clinical trials keeps faculty abreast of the newest treatment combinations. Current research interests include prostate and bladder cancer. The prostate cancer focus is on biomolecular markers and mechanisms, genetic mistakes that give rise to prostate cancer, and new methods to diagnose and treat the cancer. The pediatric urology laboratory is investigating stem cell biology and tissue engineering. In addition, research focuses on the effectiveness of antegrade and retrograde percutaneous nephrolithotripsy, metabolic abnormalities and effective treatment regimens for recurrent stone formations, sacral root stimulation for voiding dysfunction and neurogenic bladder, nonoperative treatments for stress incontinence, and new laparoscopic techniques for renal surgeries.
