Medical Student Clerkship in Radiology: RDI 461

Course Overview

The senior medical student's objectives for this course are 1) to develop a working knowledge of the role that each medical imaging modality plays with respect to the diagnostic evaluation and treatment of patients, 2) to understand basic concepts of medical imaging science, instrumentation, and radiation safety, insofar as they relate to patient care decisions and to patient / employee safety, 3) to gain an appreciation of how different examinations are performed, particularly with respect to preparing patients to undergo the examinations, and 4) to learn basic principles of medical image interpretation relevant to one's future role as a practicing physician.

The student will gain first hand experience by rotating through each of the following medical imaging services: Chest Imaging (CT and plain film), Abdominal Imaging (CT, MRI, ultrasound), GI and GU (plain film and fluoroscopy), Neuro Imaging (CT, MRI, fluoroscopy), Vascular-Interventional Radiology, Nuclear Medicine (general, cardiac, and PET/CT), Pediatric Imaging (all modalities), Musculoskeletal imaging (plain film, CT, MRI, fluoroscopy), and Emergency Radiology. There will be daily conferences consisting of didactic lectures and unknown case presentations. The student is responsible for preparing three current clinical cases for in-class presentation. Grading is based upon a 100 point scale: 50 points objective final exam, 30 points practical diagnosis exam, and 20 points divided between clinical case presentations and in-class participation. Exams are based upon required reading, lectures, in-class presentations, and the clinical rotations. It is required that participants be present on the last day of the rotation to take the final exam.

Up to eight students may take the course per four-week period. Interested students should contact the Course Coordinator to determine availability.
