Visiting Students Application Process
Visiting Students from LCME-Accredited Medical Schools:
Starting 07/01/2009 UC Davis School of Medicine will be accepting applications from visiting students from LCME accredited medical schools through VSAS only.
Visiting Students from non-LCME-Accredited Medical Schools (includes International Visiting Students):Visiting students from non-LCME accredited medical schools and international medical schools will be applying according to the paper process found below.
Processing Fees: All applications received on or after July 1, 2009 will be charged processing fees as follows:
1) Medical students from LCME-accredited schools: $150 per elective.https://chtapps.ucdmc.ucdavis.edu/servlet/CmeSignIn?ccode=SOMLCME .
2) Medical students from non-LCME accredited schools (which includes international medical students):

Visiting students to UC Davis School of Medicine must be in their final year of medical school and have completed courses comparable to the University of California, Davis, School of Medicine third year curriculum. Students must be proficient in the English language, such that you can understand an English-speaking patient and the patient can clearly understand you.
It is entirely up to each department to determine whether they will be able to accommodate visiting students and what criteria will be used to accept students into an externship. You may be asked to provide transcripts, USMLE Step 1 scores, a current CV etc. Visiting students may take up to 8 weeks of electives at UC Davis School of Medicine.
Applying for an externship
- Review the list of electives to find the course you wish to take.
- Contact the course coordinator for the department that interests you to arrange the externship. Do not send an application until the externship has been arranged with the department.
- After the course coordinator has reserved a rotation for you, complete the application packet
- Send the Application for Externship to:

Sacramento, CA 95817 - You will be notified by e-mail when the packet is received and if there are items missing. If you do not have access to email or check it regularly, you will need to contact the School of Medicine Registrar's Office to verify the status of your application.
- When the application packet is complete, it is sent to the department to finalize the rotation.
- All paperwork should be submitted and approved 3 months before the beginning of your elective. The rotation may be cancelled if a complete packet is not submitted in a timely fashion.
- Check in with your departmental contact person on your first day.
Please keep in mind that the department is turning away other students by holding a place for you. If you decide not to do the rotation, let the department course coordinator know as soon as possible so that they may give that place to another student.
