Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO)

  1. The Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO) is an application system designed to make it easier for medical students to apply for senior electives at United States Liaison Committee on Medical Education (U.S. LCME) medical schools and independent academic medical centers.

  2.  Student information in VSLO is populated from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Student Records System.  Information in the AAMC’s Student Record System is inputted by the UC Davis School of Medicine Registrar’s Office from information students submit through American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS), the UC Davis School of Medicine Registrar's Office and through Student Information System Web (SISWeb).

  3. The Registrar’s Office takes care of the following VSLO components (Registrar’s Office needs to have at least 1 week to process paperwork):

    1. As certain students are eligible for away rotations (in good academic and/or professional standing) and then provides authorizations to students with which they can apply to outside electives.
    2. Confirms and verifies that all School of Medicine required immunizations are current and that other, generally accepted, baseline requirements are met.
    3. Uploads transcripts, immunization records and, if needed, supplemental documents (eg. Letter of Reccomendation(LOR)).
    4. Then releases student applications to away institutions.

  4. Once accepted for an away elective, students should work with the 4th Year Specialist in the Curriculum Office to have the elective approved by the respective UC Davis department and entered into eFlight.

  5. No 4th year credit can be given for away electives that are not in eFlight prior to the first day of the elective.

Other (not VSLO)

  1. Some off-campus electives that are affiliated with UC Davis School of Medicine may be enrolled in with a completed off-campus form (ex. student-run clinics).  The Registrar’s Office can help you determine what paperwork you will need.

  2. LCME-accredited institutions that are not VSLO Host schools will require paper applications.

    1. All application paperwork required by the away institution will be submitted by the student with help from the Registrar’s Office when necessary. Registrar’s Office needs to have at least 1 week to process paperwork.

  3. Once accepted for an away elective, students should work with the 4th Year Specialist in the Curriculum Office to have the elective approved by the respective UC Davis department and entered into eFlight.

  4. No 4th year credit can be given for away electives that are not in eFlight prior to the first day of the elective.

Immunization Requirements (VSLO and Non-VSLO)

  1. Different schools have different immunization/health requirements.

  2.  Employee Health Services (EHS) only supports the UC Davis School of Medicine health requirements; students will have to go to their Primary Care Physician (PCP) or local clinic to comply with non-UC Davis health requirements.

    1. If a health care practitioner signature is required, the UC Davis School of Medicine Registrar’s Office will compile all immunization/health information we have on file and enter it onto the away institution form and will get an Associate Dean medical degree (M.D.) signature on the form in order to help students’ comply with this requirement. If a student wishes, they may have their PCP complete the form.
    2. EHS cannot compile the information the Registrar’s Office has on file; please do not ask them to do so.

  3. Students are responsible for getting their lab records from their PCP, extra vaccinations, titers etc. – whatever the away institutions require that are not required at UC Davis School of Medicine.
