The UC Davis Medical Center is located in Sacramento and is the sponsoring institution for the program. Training program rotations are primarily at UCDMC. The Health System is also integrated with the VA Hospital at Mather Field and the Sacramento Bloodsource (both 15 minutes from UCDMC). Residents participate in scheduled rotations at these facilities.

The pathology residency is a fully accredited program of integrated training in anatomic and clinical pathology. The trainees are expected to demonstrate competence in achieving specified learning objectives based upon specific performance criteria. All postgraduate physicians are required to demonstrate acceptable levels of competence in service pathology, laboratory administration, and teaching. In addition, each resident is required to participate in an original scientific project with the goal of publication in a peer review journal. A didactic lecture series provides the foundation of basic knowledge in both anatomic and clinical pathology. Training experiences include autopsy, neuropathology, surgical pathology, cytopathology, fine needle aspiration, dermatopathology, blood banking, hematopathology, cytogenetics, microbiology, pediatric pathology, electron microscopy, informatics, immunology, chemistry, toxicology, therapeutic drug monitoring, forensic pathology, molecular pathology and other specialities. Opportunities for research are available in the School of Medicine, Department of Pathology.

Candidates must be eligible for licensure in the State of California. If there is any question regarding eligibility, inquiries should go directly to the Medical Board of California. First-year appointments will be made through the National Residency Match Program (NRMP) and applications are accepted through ERAS. Appointments at advanced levels are occasionally available, and open filing is permitted. Following review of applications, interviews of selected candidates will be arranged. Although currently we do not have a minimum score, or graduation year requirement, these factors are taken into consideration during the interviewing process.
