PMR 440 – Introduction to Rehabilitation Medicine

Course Description:

In this two-week clerkship, students will gain experience in inpatient and outpatient care in the diverse field of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is the medical specialty that emphasizes the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disorders that may cause temporary or permanent disability and impairment.
One week of this rotation will be spent as a member of the inpatient physiatry team, where students will help care for patients on acute inpatient rehabilitation after life changing events such as stroke, brain injury and spinal cord injury.
An additional week will be spent rotating through a variety of outpatient clinics, such as general PM&R, amputee, spinal cord injury and neuromuscular medicine.

Course Prerequisite:

  • Fourth Year Medical Student
  • Completion of Internal Medicine 430
  • Completion of Surgery 430
  • Consent of instructor

Schedule:

  • 1 week rotating through the UC Davis Inpatient Rehabilitation Service
  • 1 week rotating through the outpatient PM&R subspecialty clinics

PMR 461 – Comprehensive Rehabilitation Medicine

Course Description:

This four-week course is designed as a broad overview of PM&R practice for students interested in residency training in the specialty or closely associated field. Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is the medical specialty that emphasizes the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disorders that may cause temporary or permanent disability and impairment.
One week of this rotation will be spent as a member of the inpatient physiatry team, where students will help care for patients on acute inpatient rehabilitation after life changing events, such as stroke, brain injury and spinal cord injury.
Two weeks of the rotation are spent rotating through a variety of outpatient clinics, such as general PM&R, amputee, neuromuscular medicine, spinal cord injury and neuromuscular medicine.
One of the final weeks is spent working with pediatric physiatrists and other specialists at Shriners Children's caring for children with a variety of disabling conditions.

PMR 463 – Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine

Course Description:

During this clerkship, students will obtain education and training in the outpatient clinical care of children with a wide variety of medical conditions at Shriners Children's. Students will rotate through a variety of different outpatient clinics including cerebral palsy, neuromuscular disease, limb deficiency, spinal cord injury, spina bifida, brachial plexus and sports medicine. This rotation will introduce students to diagnosing and treating disabling medical conditions as well as utilizing community resources to care for children. Overall, students hone their skills in neurologic and musculoskeletal exam, evaluating for developmental delay and determining appropriate work-up for diagnoses and treatment. Students will develop an awareness of how disability can impact functioning at home, school and in recreation.
