Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Message from the Chair
Welcome to the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) at the University of California, Davis. We are an academic department of the UC Davis Health System and School of Medicine. Our mission is to provide superior care for persons with acute and chronic musculoskeletal and neuromuscular disabilities, provide state-of-the-art education to residents and medical students, and create new research knowledge in the field of PM&R.
Integral components of our Department include Adult and Pediatric Inpatient Rehabilitation Units within the University of California, Davis Medical Center. In this setting, we provide comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation for persons with disabilities requiring intensive physical, occupational, speech and psychologic therapies. Our outpatient PM&R Clinics include subspecialty clinics in Spinal Cord Injury, Spine Disorders, Sports Medicine, Prosthetics/Orthotics, Adult and Pediatric Neuromuscular Disease, and others. Within the Ambulatory Care Center of the UC Davis Medical campus, our outpatient PM&R Therapy Services include state-of-the-art exercise equipment and a therapeutic pool.
The Department maintains research facilities at both the Davis and Sacramento campus locations, including a human performance laboratory within the UC Davis Medical Center. We maintain consistent funding from the National Institute of Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR) for our Research & Training Center in Neuromuscular Diseases, with many ongoing projects related to the characterization and treatment of these disorders. Other funding sources include the National Institute of Health (NIH).
We offer both 3 and 4-year resident training programs in PM&R with full ACGME accreditation. A unique aspect of our residency training program is the excellent training in outpatient musculoskeletal, EMG, and occupational medicine, highly desirable for PM&R physicians in the 21st century. Additionally, the resident rotation at Shriners' Hospital provides superior training in Pediatric Rehabilitation.
We believe strongly in the importance of PM&R training for medical students, and offer 2 and 4-week rotations with "tracks" individualized for the student's interests: Traditional PM&R track, Musculoskeletal/Sports Medicine track, and Pediatric Rehabilitation track.
Thank you for your interest in the Department of PM&R at UC Davis Medical Center.
