Vitreo-Retinal Service
UC Davis Health System’s Vitreo-retinal Service in the Department of Ophthalmology and Vision Science provides a highly specialized consultation in the diagnosis and treatment of complex diseases of the retina, vitreous and macula.
Our clinic is equipped with a full range of state-of-the-art technology to provide the most accurate and complete diagnostic information:
- Digital fluorescein angiography to examine the circulation of the retina
- Fundus photography including wide-field fundus imaging with a mobile RetCam II camera to document retinal pathology even in pediatric or immobile patients
- ICG (indocyanine green) angiography to enhance visualization of the choroidal layer, deep to the retina
- Optical coherence tomography (OCT) to obtain a cross-sectional image of the retina
- A- and B-scan ultrasonography to measure the eye and identify abnormalities in the retina when the retina cannot be visualized
- 3-Diminsional ultrasound tomography which takes serial 2-Dimensional B-scans to produce a volumetric 3-Diminsional image of the internal eye structure
- Ultra-Bio-Microscope which provides a high resolution view of the anterior segment structures of the eye
- PCR (polymerase chain reaction) for diagnostic testing of aqueous or vitreous aspirate in patients with suspected infectious uveitis.
Our team of board-certified and fellowship-trained vitreoretinal specialists provide the latest medical and surgical treatment for all retinal diseases. They include:
- Vitrectomy and laser treatment for diabetic retinopathy
- Photodynamic therapy for wet macular degeneration
- Macugen intravitreal injections for wet macular degeneration
- Intravitreal kenalog injections for macular edema or wet macular degeneration
- Vitrectomy surgery for macular hole and pucker
- Surgery for retinal detachment
- Treatment for retinopathy of prematurity
- Subfoveal surgery for choroidal neovascular membrane
- Vitrectomy for branch retinal vein occlusion
- Surgery for posterior segment trauma
- Intravitreal fluocinolone steroid implant for posterior uveitis
- Proton beam therapy for intraocular melanoma
- Brachytherapy for intraocular melanoma
As a well recognized teaching and research institution, the UC Davis vitreo-retinal specialists are in the forefront of new treatment modalities for macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and uveitis. We participate in many key national clinical studies with some of the nation’s leading research institutions. As such, the following pioneering treatments are available to our patients participating in these studies:
- rhuFAB V2 (Ranibizumab) for wet macular degeneration
- Anecortate acetate for prevention of wet macular degeneration
- Protein Kinase C Inhibitor for diabetic retinopathy
- Intravitreal fluocinolone implant for diabetic macular edema or posterior uveitis
- Intravitreal posurdex steroid for macular edema due to vein occlusion or diabetic retinopathy
- Intravenous squalamine lactate for wet macular degeneration
