Blade Free LASIK

[Laser in-Situ Keratomileusis]
LASIK is the standard procedure to correct near-sightedness, far-sightedness, and astigmatism.

LASIK is performed on an outpatient basis. At UC Davis, your surgeon will use all blade-free (femtosecond laser) technology to create a thin flap on the front surface of the cornea. The excimer laser then reshapes the exposed cornea to correct your vision. When the treatment is complete, the flap is replaced in its original position where it self-adheres to the underlying cornea.

Femtosecond Laser LASIK
Traditionally, doctors have used a hand-held blade (microkeratome) that moves across the eye to cut a corneal flap. While this procedure was extremely safe and effective, complications did occur.

Femtosecond technology uses rapid pulses of laser to create a corneal flap. This is computer controlled for maximum precision and accuracy. The femtosecond laser flap creation process takes only 20 seconds.

Ultimately, this blade-free femtosecond laser technology gives patients more confidence and less anxiety going in for LASIK with better and safer results.

Advantages of LASIK eye surgery include:

  • Little or no discomfort following the surgery
  • Recovery of vision often within 1-2 days
  • Little risk of developing scarring following treatment
  • Relative ease of doing additional laser enhancements should this be necessary
