FEDERAL DIRECT LOAN PROGRAM ANNOUNCEMENTS
1. DIRECT LOAN SERVICING CENTER: Beginning October 1, 2013, the Direct Loan Servicing Center will offer only informational messaging. If borrowers call the Direct Loan Servicing Center, they will enter an Interactive Voice Response (IVR) System. There will no longer be customer service representatives to answer phone calls. On November 16, all Direct Loan Servicing Center support and messaging will end. In turn, for questions about a loan that has been transferred from the Direct Loan Servicing Center to a new federal loan servicer, contact the new servicer. Contact information for the appropriate servicer can be found on the Loan Servicing Centers Contact Information page. The new servicer is now fully responsible for handling all questions related to a borrower’s transferred loans. For questions or concerns related to credit status and denied credit decision appeals, obligations and responsibilities of Direct PLUS Loan endorsers, and all actions performed on the StudentLoans.gov Web site, contact the Student Loan Support Center at (800) 557-7394. (See Official Announcement dated September 30, 2013.)
2. INCREASED LOAN ORIGINATION FEES FOR DIRECT LOANS DISBURSED ON OR AFTER DECEMBER 1, 2013: The U.S. Department of Education has issued an announcement regarding the impact of the sequestration. The sequester increases the origination fees charged to Direct Loan borrowers beyond last year's increases. The new loan fee percentages will apply only with regard to loans where the first disbursement is made on or after December 1, 2013. The new loan fees are 1.072 percent for subsidized Direct Loans and unsubsidized Direct Loans, and 4.288 percent for Direct PLUS Loans (both parent and graduate student PLUS Loans). (See Official Announcement dated October 17, 2013.)
SPECIAL HOTEL RATES FOR USMLE CLINICAL SKILLS (CS) EXAMINEES
To assist students with travel costs for the CS exam, the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) has negotiated a special rate for examinees at hotels within close proximity of each of the exam sites. Please note that some of the hotels have listed blackout dates during which the negotiated rates are not applicable. Visit the AAMC Web site for details and reservations.
