Pathology research

As an integral part of their growth and development, residents are expected to participate in departmental research activities. Ongoing clinically oriented research and developmental programs are active in all sections of the laboratories as we assess new technologies and evaluate our diagnostic procedures.

Clinically oriented basic research programs are available in gene therapy, immunodiagnostics, oncogene research, immunotherapy, nutrional pathology and transplantation pathology, image analysis, and bioengineering. Basic research programs in breast cancer, prostate cancer, alcoholism, neuropathology, retroviruses and gastrointestinal pathology round out our program.

Teaching opportunities

Residents have opportunities to teach medical students, fellow residents and medical technology students. Residents regularly present the pathology of recent cases in numerous departmental and hospital conferences. In addition, residents have opportunities to give formal presentations to allied health personnel. Residents also are asked to teach in laboratory exercises for second-year medical students in both general and systemic pathology courses.

Stipends and benefits

UC Davis provides pathology residents with highly competitive salaries and one of the most attractive benefits packages in the nation. Benefits include professional liability insurance, medical-dental-optical insurance, hospitalization and disability insurance, laundry service, on-call meals, sick leave, and generous vacation.
