Our pediatric nephrology program ranked 34th nationally in the 2023–2024 U.S. News & World Report Best Children’s Hospitals survey.

‘Save the vein’ initiative helps children with kidney disease

The UC Davis pediatric nephrology team launched an initiative to help preserve the veins of children with chronic kidney disease and end-stage kidney disease. Medical teams use the dominant arm for lab draws and IV placement, while preserving the veins of the non-dominant arm for future venous access. Patients receive a “save the vein” arm band to identify their non-dominant arm, and are identified in the electronic medical record so phlebotomists, providers, and nurses remember to minimize blood draws.

Unique dialysis service provides bridge to transplant

To better serve children waiting for a kidney, our program continues to be the region’s only outpatient peritoneal dialysis service for patients under 10 years of age.
