Department of Radiation Oncology

Radiobiology

Radiobiology makes essential contributions to the clinical, academic and research aims of our comprehensive radiation oncology department.

Radiobiologist Andrew Vaughan, Ph.D. collaborates with the clinical and physics staff, drawing from his broad background to teach the complement of cancer molecular biology and classic radiobiology. Dr. Vaughan promotes integrating the biology, clinical and technology research programs, taking a multi-disciplinary approach to asking questions of clinical relevance. He conducts research in laboratories on the UC Davis Medical Center campus and at the Mather VA Medical Center, where he supports a teamwork approach among the primary investigators (PI) and staff. He is Associate Chief of Staff, Research and Development, at the Department of Veterans Administration Northern California Health Care System. He also was recently appointed to serve as a member of the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) Basic Mechanisms of Cancer Therapeutics Study Section. The committee reviews grant applications submitted to NIH. Dr. Vaughan has served on many national committees involving cancer research and technology including four years on the National Cancer Institute (NCI) review panel for F32 Research Fellowships.

Medical residents in the UC Davis radiation oncology training program have the opportunity to participate in biology research with Dr. Vaughan.
