The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery provides comprehensive medical and surgical care of the musculoskeletal system for both adults and children. As a leading West Coast center for orthopaedic care and a key player in the world-renown UC Davis Trauma Center — one of the largest and busiest trauma programs in the nation — the department provides a full spectrum of treatment specialties. The department also offers a wide range of educational programs for medical specialists, residents and medical students and pursues broad research investigations.

In keeping with UC Davis Health System's commitment to discovering and sharing knowledge, the department established academic and clinical care affiliations with partner organizations and regional, state and national health-care systems, including the Veterans Administration Northern California Hospital System, Shriners Hospitals for Children Northern California and Kaiser Permanente, Sacramento.

Announcement naming our new department chair, Paul E. Di Cesare, M.D.

Education

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery offers extensive educational opportunities for medical students, residents and postgraduate and community physicians. The training program has four specialty fellow positions, 21 residents, and one research fellow who rotates from the residency program into the basic science laboratory during the PG-3 year. Close collaboration with Shriners Hospitals for Children, Northern California provides exceptional training in pediatric orthopaedics for residents. The residency program also includes a three-month resident rotation at Kaiser Permanente Hospital that enhances adult orthopaedic training.

Research

Molecular and biomechanical research are the major focus of the department's Lawrence J. Ellison Musculoskeletal Research Center. Hari Reddi, Ph.D., an internationally recognized molecular and cellular biologist, established a school-wide program in tissue regeneration and repair. The laboratory also has a well-established, nationally known biomechanics laboratory lead by David Fyhrie, Ph.D., with focus on bone modeling and remodeling, trabecular micromechanics and joint biomechanics.

The department has 19 orthopaedic clinical faculty members and six full-time research faculty, including three mechanical engineers, a molecular biologist and two cell biologists. Approximately 50 volunteer community physicians from Northern California have academic appointments with responsibilities in education, research and patient care. The Shriners Hospitals for Children, Northern California, located adjacent to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, has four additional full-time and two part-time faculty with appointments at UC Davis. To locate an orthopaedic surgery faculty member, please visit the "our team" page or search using the health system's "find a faculty/researcher" tool.
