Inpatient Transfer Services
UC Davis Medical Center provides around-the-clock rapid Referral and Transfer Services for high-risk obstetric and gynecologic patients who require the expertise of a leading academic health center.

As part of the Sacramento region’s only academic medical center, UC Davis Health specialists apply the most up-to-date medical treatments, the latest research findings and a unique depth of expertise to manage both routine and complex patients.
UC Davis Medical Center has the region’s only nationally ranked Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in a state-designated Children’s Hospital, as well as the Central Valley’s only level I Pediatric and Adult Trauma center, the highest designation possible as verified by the American College of Surgeons. Our specialists are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to respond to urgent referrals or transfer calls.

UC Davis Health Maternal-Fetal Medicine and gynecologic specialists are always available to arrange for patient transfers or emergency referral services. Calls are answered by qualified Transfer Center registered nurses.
For obstetrics transfers, referring providers will be connected simultaneously with a Perinatologist and the Labor and Delivery Charge Nurse to expedite the transfer process.
For gynecologic transfers, referring providers will be connected directly to a gynecologic specialist. Specialty care is available in general gynecology, urogynecology, family planning and gynecologic oncology services.
Transfer Center nurses work with referring physicians and staff to make all necessary arrangements for transfer via ambulance or helicopter to UC Davis Medical Center.
We know that patient transfers commonly involve arrangements for loved ones who want to be present to provide support. Information for family and friends can be printed from this link, including directions, parking, and overnight accommodations. Additionally, the information sheet explains where patients will most likely go within the hospital for diagnosis or treatment once they arrive.
NICU/SCN - The UC Davis Children’s Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is the region's only nationally ranked Level IV nursery, and cares for infants from throughout Northern California. The NICU specializes in the care of high-risk infants, including those born prematurely and those needing high-risk care. The Special Care Nursery is a Level II designated unit for children who are seriously ill but expected to recover more rapidly.
The 49-bed combined NICU and Special Care Nursery includes a 1-bed isolation room and is staffed by neonatologists 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Working with subspecialists in other fields, such as cardiology and pulmonology, our team of experts treats infants with a variety of health conditions, including:
- Birth asphyxia
- Congenital heart disease
- Congenital anomalies (birth defects)
- Jaundice
- Infectious diseases such as pneumonia
- Respiratory distress
PICU/PCICU - The UC Davis Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit is a 24-bed, state-of-the-art unit that opened in November 2011. The unit offers pediatric cardiothoracic surgery services — expert care for children who have undergone heart surgeries – as well as services for children who have contracted infectious diseases, consumed poisonous substances, or had transplants and other complex and traumatic procedures. PICU/PCICU services are available 24 hours a day, 365 days per year.
