UC Davis Medical Center was awarded the Patient Safety First "Zero-Hero Award" for no early (<39 weeks) elective deliveries for 15 consecutive months. The rate should be zero and the current rate for hospitals across the US is approximately 4.6%.

The award was presented at the at the Annual Patient Safety First meeting in November 2013. As of May 2014, we have more than 30 consecutive months of no elective deliveries.

Accomplishing this feat is a tribute to the combined efforts of physicians and nurses who provide obstetric care at out institution.

In 2010, Patient Safety First... a California Partnership for Health was launched to improve quality of care, reduce health care costs and ultimately save lives by improving patient safety and perinatal care in California. Patient Safety First is a groundbreaking partnership between National Health Foundation, California's Regional Hospital Associations, Anthem Blue Cross and with over 180 hospitals across the state, making it the largest in the Nation.

UC Davis ranks among the top medical schools in the nation and is a regional resource for training the surgeons, nurses and other health-care professionals of today and tomorrow. At the UC Davis Center for Virtual Care, a variety of sophisticated simulation training tools help create a virtual hospital environment that is ideal for practicing medical procedures such as minimally invasive techniques. The facility includes a robotic-assisted surgical system and laparoscopic equipment. It is the university’s hub for hands-on, no-risk training and skill development.
