Nationally recognized surgical oncologist joins faculty

Scott Hundahl, formerly director of The Queen’s Medical Center Cancer Institute in Honolulu, is the new chief of surgery for the Veterans Administration Northern California Health Care System. Hundahl also joins the faculty of the Department of Surgery at UC Davis School of Medicine and Medical Center.

The VA Northern California Health Care System encompasses eight outpatient clinics and a new hospital at the former Mather Air Force Base in Sacramento. Through its long partnership with the VA, the UC Davis School of Medicine and Medical Center provides care for veterans, while VA facilities serve as teach- ing centers for medical residents.

Hundahl received his bache- lor’s degree magna cum laude from Harvard in 1977, his medical degree from Yale in 1981, and completed his surgical oncology fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York in 1988. His research and clinical interests focus on gastric, thyroid and parathyroid cancers, as well as outcomes research, cancer registries and surgical quality control in clinical trials.

He is a past governor of the American College of Surgeons, a past chair of its Commission on Cancer and a former vice chair of the National Cancer Data Base. He currently serves on the Southwest Oncology Group’s GI Executive Committee.

“Dr. Hundahl is an outstanding surgical oncologist who is recognized nationally for his work in the American College of Surgeons and the Southwest Oncology Group,” says James Goodnight, professor and chair of surgery. “He is a very fortunate addition to our surgical faculty, our oncology group and the VA staff.”
