Dr. Farias is an Associate Professor in Neurology at the UC Davis. Primary research interests involve the development of new measures of everyday functioning applicable to older adults with cognitive impairment and dementia, and the study of the how cognitive and non-cognitive impairments (i.e. motor and neuropsychiatric impairments) influence everyday functioning. Other active research interests in the area of aging related to the influence of vascular disease on cognitive decline, the role of cognitive reserve in moderating the effects of disease on cognition, and the development of new approaches to measure cognitive reserve in older adults (i.e. the use of idea density). Dr. Farias also maintains an active interest in cognitive function in temporal lobe epilepsy. In particular, whether cognitive impairment is progressive in temporal lobe epilepsy and what are the underlying mechanisms of this progression.
In terms of her clinical work, Dr. Farias is Director of Neuropsychology Services through the Neuroscience Clinic at UC Davis. This clinic evaluates patients with a wide variety of neurological illnesses and injury, the most common of which include: brain tumor, stroke, traumatic brain injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's Disease, and various forms of dementia. Dr. Farias also works closely with the UC Davis Comprehensive Epilepsy Program and oversees the pre- and post-surgical neuropsychological evaluations of patients undergoing surgery for epilepsy, as well as regularly conducting Wadas and intra-operative/extra-operative language mapping.
