Doctors and residents discuss in hospital room.

Beginning in the 2022-2023 academic year, in response to resident requests, we joined several other pediatric residency programs nationally in piloting a X + Y (3 + 1) schedule. Instead of having a half-day continuity clinic weekly, continuity clinics are concentrated in the Y week. By moving all continuity clinics to Y weeks, residents are able to spend 3 focused X weeks on a rotation before their ambulatory Y week.

We also started a primary care immersion week for each year of training, allowing our residents to get a jump-start in feeling prepared to be an outpatient general pediatrician.

*Residents who are not pursuing a career in general pediatrics, neonatology, or pediatric hospital medicine have the option to substitute the Newborn Nursery supervisory rotation for an elective that is more specific to the resident’s career goal.

**Residents are scheduled for 3 wks PICU and 3 wks NICU. Residents may choose 6 wks ICU experience in one setting (e.g., 6 wks PICU, 0 wks NICU) as a PGY3 if they are able to find another PGY3 to swap ICU rotations.
