Division of Hematology and Oncology
The Division of Hematology and Oncology and the UC Davis Cancer Center have enjoyed a period of tremendous growth and prosperity over the past decade. From six faculty members in the early nineties, we have grown to be the largest Division in the Department of Internal Medicine with 41 faculty members, including 23 clinician-scientists, with expertise that covers the breadth of hematology and medical oncology. Our fellowship training program enrolls 10 full-time physicians being trained in the art and science of cancer medicine. The Division has one of the largest research portfolios of any academic unit in the School of Medicine, with over $11 million extramural funding annually. The UC Davis campus ranks 17th nationally in extramural funding and devotes over $80 million to cancer research. The UC Davis Cancer Center is the only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Cancer Center in inland California and we proudly offer vigorous developmental therapeutics programs with innovative therapies for our patients.
For the individual patient all this growth and activity translates to access to cutting edge treatment for cancer and blood disorders. However, the Division not only attends to the physical aspects of care, but also the psychological and emotional impact of cancer. Division faculty participate in research related to cancer education, symptom control, and effective physician-patient communication. The Division has a faculty psycho-oncologist to help counsel families dealing with a cancer diagnosis. All of our efforts are ultimately focused on providing the optimal care for patients in the Sacramento region, and improving the outcome for all patients with cancer.
