Flu vaccines for UC Davis Health patients

Updated September 2023

At UC Davis Health we always encourage our patients get flu vaccines. Due to flu season happening at the same time as the ongoing presence of COVID-19, getting a flu vaccine is even more important.

All UC Davis Health primary care clinics are now offering flu vaccines to their regular patients. There are several ways you can get a flu vaccine from us:

  • You can schedule an appointment to get your flu vaccine during an in-person visit to your primary care clinic.
  • At some of our primary care clinic locations, you can schedule a drive-through flu vaccine appointment. At these appointments, you do not need to get out of your car to get your flu vaccine. Some restrictions apply, so see below on this page for more details.
  • If you have a regular primary care appointment coming up, you can ask to receive a flu vaccine during that appointment. When you arrive for your appointment, please tell the clinical staff that you are also seeking a flu vaccine that day.
  • If you are scheduling an appointment to get an updated COVID-19 vaccine through UC Davis Health, you can also get your flu vaccine at that same appointment. When you arrive for your appointment, please tell the clinical staff that you are also seeking a flu vaccine that day.
    • Important note: you can add a flu vaccine to your scheduled COVID vaccine appointment when you arrive. However, you cannot add the COVID vaccine to a scheduled flu vaccine appointment. This is because of the special way COVID vaccines must be handled.

If you are not a UC Davis Health patient, our flu resources page has more ways to get a flu vaccine.

To schedule your flu vaccination as a UC Davis Health patient:

The most convenient way to schedule is to use MyUCDavisHealth. Click Schedule an Appointment, then select Flu Shot, and follow the prompts to choose your appointment options.

Other options to schedule a flu vaccine:

  • You can call your primary care clinic to schedule your vaccine if needed.
  • We are often able to handle walk-in flu vaccines, during regular office hours. However, you may be asked to wait while we treat other patients who have appointments. Scheduling a vaccine appointment may be the most convenient way for you to get the vaccine.

About drive-through flu vaccines

UC Davis Health patients ages 9 years and older, who have previously received a flu vaccine with UC Davis Health, can schedule a drive-through flu vaccine appointment at the following locations and dates:

  • Elk Grove: Oct. 21 and Dec. 2, 2023
  • Rancho Cordova: Oct. 7 and Nov. 4, 2023
  • Roseville: Oct. 14, Oct. 28, and Nov. 18, 2023

Drive-through flu vaccine appointments can be scheduled for time slots between 8:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., and between 1 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Important note: We cannot give COVID-19 vaccines or boosters at the drive-through flu vaccine clinics. See how to schedule an updated COVID vaccine.

Timing flu vaccines and COVID-19 vaccines

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) states that both the COVID vaccines and flu vaccines can be given at the same visit. However people should also follow the recommended schedule for either vaccine, if they aren't up to date.

  • For COVID-19, the CDC recommends everyone aged 5 years and older should get 1 updated COVID-19 vaccine, at least two months after getting the last dose of any COVID-19 vaccine. The agency lists additional recommendations for people who are moderately or severely immunocompromised, and for children aged 6 months to 4 years.
  • For the flu, the CDC recommends everyone 6 months and older should get a flu vaccine every season with rare exceptions, and ideally everyone should be vaccinated by the end of October. The agency lists additional recommendations for certain groups of people, such as some children and some pregnant people.

The CDC's flu website usually has more information about getting flu vaccines and COVID-19 vaccines at the same time.

UC Davis Health's coronavirus website also has more information about updated COVID-19 vaccines and how to get them.
