Family Medicine / Obstetrics Residency Program
Program Overview
This unique program provides residents with a strong foundation in family medicine and a surgical obstetrics experience over four years of training. FM/OB residents complete all the goals and objectives of the UC Davis Family Medicine Residency Program and develop additional proficiency at surgical obstetrics.
Graduates of the FM/OB program will be board eligible in family medicine and will receive an additional certificate of completion for the FM/OB program. The FM/OB Program is administered jointly by the UC Davis Departments of Family and Community Medicine and Obstetrics and Gynecology. Both are fully accredited residency programs.

Applicants interested in the Family Medicine / Obstetrics program should apply to our Family Medicine Residency Program through ERAS.
This unique program provides residents with a strong foundation in family medicine and an advanced obstetrics experience (emphasizing surgical and high-risk obstetrics) over four years of training. We offer one FM/OB PGY-1 position annually.
To be considered for an FM/OB interview you must also submit the following by October 1, 2024:
- A supplemental personal statement describing your interest in the FMOB Program. Please tell us why this type of training is important to you. Email this statement to Roz Shirley at: rmshirley@ucdavis.edu.
- At least one letter of recommendation from someone with whom you’ve had obstetrical experience. This letter should be included in your ERAS application.
Applicants should apply to both the core program and the FMOB program. If selected to interview for the FM/OB program there will be a separate interview invitation focused on this portion of the program in addition to an interview with the core Family Medicine program.
Comprehensive FM/OB Curriculum
Residents will complete 16 months of rotations focused on the labor and delivery experience, gaining proficiency in labor management, vaginal deliveries, Cesarean sections and care of high risk pregnancies. This is equivalent to the obstetrics portion of the training of our Ob/Gyn residents. While the first year of obstetric training focuses on gaining basic skills, in subsequent years the residents gain additional knowledge and expertise in leading the obstetric team. Graduates of the program average over 200 vaginal and Cesarean deliveries by the end of training.
