Our Difference

Skilled Expertise

All urologists must complete four years of urology training. But our pediatric urologists complete an extra two years of rigorous fellowship training specifically for pediatric urology. At UC Davis Health, your child receives care from specialists who deeply understand the unique needs of children. Our training helps us care for all of your child’s physical and emotional needs.

Team Approach

We bring together multiple specialists to give your child the most advanced, comprehensive care. Our pediatric urologists partner with pediatric nephrologists (kidney specialists) for conditions like kidney stones. We work closely with dietitians, psychologists and clinical nurses to address urinary issues. And if your child needs imaging tests, we call in our pediatric radiology team. This teamwork means your child receives a coordinated and personalized treatment plan.

Advanced Surgical Options

If your child needs urologic surgery, we provide leading-edge procedures that use smaller incisions. With our techniques and surgical expertise, your child has less pain and a lower risk of complications. In more severe cases, we have surgical expertise managing urologic tumors and genitourinary reconstruction.

What Are Children’s Urology Conditions?

A pediatric urologist cares for conditions that affect your child’s urinary system (bladder, kidneys, ureters and urethra) and genitals (vagina, testes and penis). With early diagnosis and treatment, we help your child feel better, sooner.

Main Types of Children’s Urology Conditions:

Bladder Conditions in Children

Some children are born with bladder problems, such as bladder exstrophy (bladder that forms outside the body). Others develop urological conditions in childhood or early adulthood, such as urinary tract infections (UTIs) or problems with voiding (urinating). Children with spina bifida may also have trouble peeing due to problems with how their bladders signal "fullness" to their brains.

Genital Conditions in Children

Some children are born with bladder problems, such as bladder exstrophy (bladder that forms outside the body). Others develop urological conditions in childhood or early adulthood, such as urinary tract infections (UTIs) or problems with voiding (urinating). Children with spina bifida may also have trouble peeing due to problems with how their bladders signal "fullness" to their brains.

Our Areas of Expertise

Our pediatric urology specialty programs provide your child with focused care for their needs. Clinics feature dedicated pediatric urologists, nurses and advanced providers with special training and extensive experience in their fields.

With specialized care, we are often able to reduce the risk of complications and avoid unnecessary surgery. Our team works with you to promote your child's healing in mind and body, and keep their recovery on track.

Our specialty clinics include:

Disorders of Sexual Development (DSD) Clinic

Disorders of sexual development (DSD) are differences in the way the genitals or reproductive organs develop. Some DSDs don’t require care, but others may involve surgery. The decision to treat these disorders is a personal one that depends upon many factors. Our multispecialty team provides compassionate support and leading-edge care in a private, comforting environment.

Pediatric Kidney Stone Clinic

Kidney or urinary stones affect children, too, and the causes are often different than adults. In most cases, our specialists treat children’s urinary stones with minimally invasive procedures for a shorter recovery. We work closely with the Nephrology Clinic at UC Davis Health to treat kidney stones. Then, we determine the cause and develop a plan to prevent future stones from forming.
