Mark D. Smith, president and chief executive officer of the California HealthCare Foundation, will discuss medicine’s growing complexity and capabilities at the UC Davis School of Medicine 2013 Dean’s Lecture.

Smith has led the California HealthCare Foundation since its founding in 1996. The grant-making philanthropy, headquartered in Oakland, supports ideas and innovations that improve quality, increase efficiency and lower the costs of care.  UC Davis Health System has been a recipient of many foundation grants, including for its telemedicine program, for which UC Davis has received national recognition.

A board-certified internist, Smith is also a member of the clinical faculty at the University of California, San Francisco and an attending physician at the Positive Health Program for AIDS care at San Francisco General Hospital.  He is a member of the Institute of Medicine, National Academy of Sciences and Chaired the Committee on The Learning Healthcare System in America.  He has served on The Performance Measurement Committee of the National Committee for Quality Assurance, the Board of the National Business Group on Health, and the Editorial Board of the Annals of Internal Medicine, and is author of On Practical Progress.

The School of Medicine’s Dean’s Lecture is free and open to the public.

The Dean's Lecture Series links UC Davis Health System and the broader community with thought leaders on the nation's critical health issues — with the goal of identifying new ways to improve health care and health for all. These public forums provide opportunities to better understand ways in which science, medicine, technology and advocacy can reduce health disparities and enhance patient care, quality of life and community health.
