New fruit and vegetable guidelines may not be feasible

New guidelines for fruit and vegetable consumption come with a bigger price tag: Low-income families would spend between 40 percent and 70 percent of their food-at-home budgets to purchase the additional servings. Study author Diana Cassady said, "The new dietary guidelines, which include more dark green vegetables, orange vegetables and legumes, are based on solid science and have the potential to help protect Americans from some of the leading causes of death, including stroke, heart disease and diet-related cancers. But we need to take the next step to ensure that all consumers can actually afford to follow the guidelines."
