Research/Academic Interests

Our main topic of research is chronic HIV infection, with an emphasis on the body's immune response to HIV in the gastrointestinal and reproductive tracts as well as the central nervous system.

We are also very interested in HIV prevention strategies, including vaccines and microbicides. Work in the laboratory is funded by grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Our major areas of study can be summarized as:

1) Cellular Immunology:  T-cell biology, innate-like T-cell subsets

2) Mucosal Immunology:  Adaptive immunity in the gastrointestinal and reproductive tracts

3) Infectious Diseases:  HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases. Emerging viruses.

4) Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV): Pathogenesis, vaccine development, prevention strategies.
