UC Davis hosts Veterans, Disabled and Diversity Career and Resource Fair on May 14
All job seekers welcome
Job openings at UC Davis will be featured at its second Veterans, Disabled and Diversity Career and Resource Fair on Wednesday, May 14, from noon to 3 p.m. at UC Davis’ Sacramento campus, on the corner of 48th Street and 2nd Avenue. The event is free and open to the general public.
Departments from both the Davis and Sacramento campuses of UC Davis and other UC campuses will be represented. With more than 28,000 people currently employed at its Davis and Sacramento locations, UC Davis is among the largest employers in the Sacramento area and is expected to continue its growth in the coming years. There are more than 400 types of positions at UC Davis in various fields ranging from entry-level to mid-level professional.
"Our inaugural fair last year was a great success, and it led directly to our hiring some very qualified attendees," said UC Davis Health System Human Resources Director Steve Chilcott. "UC Davis remains committed to helping military veterans join the workplace, and we hope that they will find this event useful in their search for employment."
Kellie Uchida is among those who found work at UC Davis through their attendance at the fair. At the time, Uchida was working at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center/Miller Children's Hospital as a nurse in its Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
"I attended the fair because I had always planned on moving back to Sacramento," said Uchida. "The career fair was definitely most helpful."
At the fair's nurse recruitment table, Uchida provided her resume to a supervisor, who told her that UC Davis Medical Center's NICU was hiring experienced nurses, and advised her to look for online job postings. A few days later, the supervisor called Uchida and encouraged her to apply for a position. She did and was hired in August 2013.
Manda Price, a 28-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force, was pondering whether to return to work while continuing to be a full-time student when she attended last year's fair.
"Attending the fair gave me an opportunity to look up UC Davis online and see what it had to offer," Price said. "As I researched UC Davis Health System, I was impressed and knew that I wanted to be associated with this organization. I was swayed most by the university's Principles of Community. The environment of openness, fairness and equality made a veteran feel right at home."
Price was hired as an analyst in the health system's Institute for Population Health Improvement in August 2013.
More than 550 people attended last year's fair. More than 30 percent of the attendees indicated they were veterans.
Christopher T. Ford, a retired lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Air Force, said, "I had the pleasure of attending last year's event while traveling on behalf of the chairman of the Joint Chief of Staff's Office of Warrior and Family Support. I was impressed by the enthusiasm, professionalism and quality of the event. I am sure this year's fair will continue the tradition of excellence and have even greater impacts for attendees and employers alike."
The fair is co-sponsored by UC Davis Human Resources; Office for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion; Office of Campus Community Relations; and Institute for Population Health Improvement.
Parking will be available in Lot 14, located on 2nd Avenue. No advance registration is required.
