She was educated and trained in wound, ostomy, foot and nail care through Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, has masters degrees in Nursing and Sociology, maintains her certification in public health, and is pursuing advanced certification related to wounds and mental health.

Dr. Damon is a hospitalist in UC Davis Health dedicated to providing high quality, patient-centered care for adults in the hospital and to providing medical education to student and resident learners.

Developments in UC Davis advanced practice research

Dr. Lori Kennedy will outline high level overview of APP research and productivity as well as discuss effective ways to navigate research in UC Davis.

Director, Center for Nursing Science

Lori Kennedy Ph.D., RN, ACNP-BC is the Director of the Center for Nursing Science and Clinical Nurse Scientist at UC Davis Health. Lori completed master's degree and clinical nurse specialist licensure in the first ACNP class in the UCSF Department of Physiological Nursing.

Her interest in clinical research prompted her interest in pursuing a Ph.D.. She was accepted into the inaugural cohort of the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing in 2010 and was awarded a Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award pre-doctoral fellowship from NIH.

Dr. Kennedy obtained her Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing Science and Health-Care Leadership in June 2014. Her research is focused on body temperature in the acute period after moderate and severe TBI and its impact on neurologic outcome.

Dr. Kennedy is active in professional organizations including national leadership in the American Association of Neuroscience Nursing, the American Board of Neuroscience Nursing, and the Agnes Marshall Walker Foundation. She has served in committee chair roles for both the Neurocritical Care Society and Society of Critical Care Medicine and is a Fellow of the Neurocritical Care Society.

Dr. Shetty received his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, completed his residency in emergency medicine at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, and completed a fellowship in Global Health and International Emergency Medicine at the University of Maryland. He received his Masters of Public Health from the University of Maryland and a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience from the University of Pittsburgh.

Dr. Shetty is an emergency physician and faculty member of the Department of Emergency Medicine at UC Davis. His interests include Emergency Medical Services, Disaster Medicine, and Global Health. He has spent several years working internationally in humanitarian aid. He is fellowship trained in Global Health and EMS.

Dr. Shetty's research interests include international health care, specifically in the application of developed diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to resource-limited settings. He also has an interest in pre-hospital care, mass casualty management, and hospital-based disaster response.

Antibiotics Resistance

Nicola Clayton, PharmD Nicola Clayton, Pharm.D.

Dr. Nicola Clayton is a Senior Infectious Diseases Clinical Pharmacist at UC Davis Health. She completed her PGY1 Acute Care residency here at UC Davis Medical Center in 2015 and went on to complete a PGY2 Infectious Diseases Residency at UC Davis Medical Center in 2016, and then continued to work at UC Davis Medical Center as a clinical pharmacist practicing in Infectious Diseases. She is the pharmacist leader of the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program at UC Davis Health, which was designated as an IDSA Antimicrobial Stewardship Center of Excellence in 2019.

Dr. Clayton is a board-certified infectious diseases pharmacist. In addition, she holds a volunteer faculty position with the UCSF School of Pharmacy and was nominated for Preceptor of the Year 2016-2017 and 2018-2019. She completed UCSF’s Master Preceptor Program and co-presented “Make your Voice Heard: Teaching Learners How to Make Effective Recommendations”, a preceptor development continuing education program, as part of UC Davis Medical Center’s Pharmacy Grand Rounds Series.

In today's APP Grand Rounds, Dr. Clayton will discuss most commonly encountered emerging drug resistant pathogens and explain the principles of antimicrobial stewardship and provide examples of how stewardship is implemented in their own practice.

Ginni Jannicelli is the Senior Hospital Services Coordinator for Sierra Donor Services and works in the UC Davis Health System as an advocate to hospital organ donor support, referrals, and resources. Ginni has over 22 years of experience working and advocating for donor services. She is known to possess the ability to combine compassion and professionalism while staying informative as she assists families in deciding towards their loved ones’ donation wishes. She has provided multiple presentations relevant to donation process.

This Advanced Practice Grand Rounds Lecture will be reviewing Sierra Donor Services; discussing provider consideration pertaining to the referral process, review various tissue and organs considered for potential donation, outline the Sierra Donor Services resources, and review updated donor guidelines.

Aaron is the Director of Ambulatory Advanced Practice for UC Davis Health. He is a Master’s prepared and board certified family nurse practitioner with 18 years of APP experience in surgical specialty care including Trauma Surgery, Acute Care Surgery, Minimally Invasive Surgery, Surgical Oncology, Bariatric Surgery, and Colorectal Surgery. He has progressively worked to improve patient experiences and outcomes through research, publication, and performance improvement. He has also managed UC Davis Health’s level 1 adult and pediatric Trauma programs and UC Davis’s Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP). He believes that empowering APPs with information and providing transparency in processes helps to build healthy systems and sustainable roles. Sharon Demeter practiced as a psychotherapist for more than a decade before she became a certified nurse midwife. She earned her Master of Arts Clinical Psychology at York University, Canada, and Master of Science in Nursing at UC San Francisco. She is in the process of acquiring her Post-Master’s Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner at UC San Francisco while she serves as the assistant director of the Master Entry Program in Nursing at the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at UC Davis.

Her clinical research and interest include Type II violence mitigation, mood disorders, PTSD, trauma-informed care, perinatal mood disorders and physiologic birth.

Dr. Assadi is an Assistant Professor of Management and Organizations in the College of Business at California State University, Sacramento. His research focuses on business ethics, decision making, and strategic management.

He has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career including the 2022 Outstanding Teaching Award, the 2020 Research and Creative Activity Award, and several best paper awards at prestigious conferences including the Strategic Management Society annual conference.

Prior to joining Sacramento State, Dr. Assadi earned his PhD in Strategic Management from Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, British Columbia, and spent two years as a Research and Teaching Assistant at the Wharton School of Business.

Geriatric Pharmacology

Charity Hale Charity Hale, PharmD

Dr. Charity Hale is a pharmacist with specialized training in Pain Management and Palliative Care. She has eight years of experience and is a Senior pharmacist on the Pharmacy Pain Management team which serves a diverse patient population with cancer and non-cancer related pain.

She is an educator who teaches for many groups including being the instructor of record for the UCSF Interdisciplinary Pain Management and Palliative Care Course. She provides bedside teaching to Pain and Palliative Care fellows, pharmacy students, pharmacy residents and medical students. Her main research interest lies in predictive model for opioid induced respiratory depression. Charity is the co-chair of P&T’s subcommittee, Pain and Sedation. She is heavily involved with policy, guideline, order set development, and maintenance improving patient safety and quality of patient care.

Sean started with Sierra Donor Services (then Golden State Donor Services), 17 years ago. He began as a Family Care Coordinator, he then spent several years as an Organ Recovery Coordinator and is now the In House Organ Recovery Coordinator For UC Davis Medical center.

  • when does SDS make a plan to speak with the family - who offers the option of organ donation to the family -
  • why the donation process takes so long, and
  • the continued family support SDS offers

Forensic Examinations for Victims of Sexual Assault

April has been working in health care for the last twenty years. Her health care journey began as a volunteer in the emergency room, prehospital care provider and registered nurse. She earned her BSN from Dominican University, her MSN/DNP Adult-Geriatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner from Grand Canyon University and is currently enrolled at Northcentral University Doctor of Education Nursing Program in Scottsdale, Az.  

April is currently working at UC Davis Medical Center as a Nurse Practitioner in Trauma & Surgical Critical Care and Sonoma County Department of Health as a Forensic examiner.  

She is affiliated with California Association of Nurse Practitioners, Society of Critical Care Medicine, American Association of Critical Care Nurses, National league of Nursing, Cal-Safe and CCFMTC. April uses her education and experience to educate her community members and peers regarding introduction, approach, evaluation, and treatment of victims of sexual assault.

Moonjoo Han, MD Moonjoo Han, MD
Dr. Moonjoo Han is an assistant professor of pediatric critical care medicine at UC Davis School of Medicine. She completed her MD at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and her residency and fellowship training at University of Pennsylvania and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Her research interests focus on pediatric sepsis. Pediatric sepsis continues to pose a significant health care burden, affecting >8% of all critically ill children with a hospital mortality rate as high as 20%. Danielle Tartar, M.D., Ph.D. Danielle Tartar, M.D., Ph.D.
Dr. Tartar is originally from St. Louis, Missouri. She completed her MD and PhD at the University of Missouri, where her research focused on CD4+ T cells in autoimmune disease. She then completed her intern year at the University of Chicago before moving to Sacramento to complete her dermatology residency at the University of California, Davis, where she served as Chief Resident in 2016-17. During residency, Dr. Tartar stayed active in research, studying the immunology of wound healing.

Her background in immunology has led her to cultivate an interest in complex medical dermatology and rheumatology-dermatology, and she is currently on faculty as both the Co-Director of Inpatient Dermatology and Co-Director of the Autoimmune Connective Tissue Disease Clinic. Dr. Tartar is also very involved in resident education at UC Davis, where she serves as the Associate Program Director. In her free time, she spends time with her two Siberian Huskies, Thor and Loki.

Ruth Shim, MD, MPH is the Luke & Grace Kim Professor in Cultural Psychiatry and Professor of Clinical Psychiatry in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Calfornia, Davis. She also serves as Associate Dean of Diverse and Inclusive Education at the University of California, Davis School of Medicine.

Dr. Shim received an MPH in health policy from Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University and an MD from Emory University School of Medicine. She is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the American Association for Community Psychiatry. She serves on the Research And Evaluation Committee of the California Mental Health Services Oversight and Accountability Commission.

She serves on the Editorial Boards of JAMA Psychiatry, Psychiatric Services, Community Mental Health Journal, and American Psychiatric Publishing, and is co-editor of the books, The Social Determinants of Mental Health, and the recently published, Social (In)Justice and Mental Health. She is a former fellow of the Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Program, and an at-large member of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine Forum on Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders. Dr. Shim’s research focuses on mental health disparities and inequities, and she provides clinical psychiatric care in the UC Davis Early Diagnosis and Preventative Treatment (EDAPT) Clinic.

Garen Wintemute, MD, MPH holds the Baker–Teret Chair in Violence Prevention at the University of California, Davis, where he directs the Violence Prevention Research Program and the UC Davis Firearm Violence Research Center. He was among the first to study firearm violence as a health problem. He is a practicing emergency medicine physician and professor of emergency medicine at the UC Davis School of Medicine.

Dr. Ellie Curtis is an Active Duty United States Air Force trauma surgeon, assigned at David Grant Medical Center (DGMC) located on Travis Air Force Base. She is part of an ongoing military-civilian partnership between David Grant and UC Davis Medical Center. Dr. Curtis completed her general surgery residency at UC Davis in 2017. She subsequently completed a fellowship in burns and critical care followed by a fellowship in palliative care both at Harborview Medical Center in Washington prior to returning to CA. Dr. Curtis’s philosophy of care centers around the overall patient experience. Her goal is to actively engage the patient, family and community so that together they can focus on optimal short and long term outcomes. In addition to trauma surgery, Dr. Curtis has special clinical interest and expertise in Burn Surgery and Palliative Care.

She currently is a 3rd year PhD student at the UC Davis Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing. Her research is focused on wives who are caregivers to their partner with dementia and what impacts decisions regarding use of resources.

Anna has worked in multiple healthcare systems including UCSF, Kaiser and NorthBay. She has worked as a Geriatric CNS, Med/Surg Clinical Practice Consultant and a Stroke Program Coordinator. She has spent many years working on programs that improve care for the older adult such as restraint reduction, appropriate sitter utilization, confusion management, falls prevention, and delirium. She has presented some of her work on delirium at the American Delirium Society conference and work on sitter utilization at CALNOC.

She joined UC Davis in August of 2020 where she is focusing on helping to implement the Nurses Improving Care for Health system Elders (NICHE) and the overall gaining initiative throughout the health system.

Cathy Cartwright Cathy Cartwright, DNP, RN-BC, PCNS, FAANCathy Cartwright is the Director of Advanced Practice Professional Development at Children’s Mercy Kansas City. Her career has been devoted to pediatric nursing, including 20 years’ experience as a Pediatric Clinical Nurse Specialist in neurosurgery. She received her BSN at the University of Missouri-Columbia and her DNP at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Cathy is a past president of the American Association of Neuroscience Nurses, the co-editor of the book Nursing Care of the Pediatric Neurosurgery Patient, the 2015 National Magnet Nurse of the Year for Exemplary Professional Practice, and a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing
