UC Davis Department of Neurology is a leading center for patient care and basic & clinica lresearch

The UC Davis Department of Neurology consists of faculty members who are engaged in clinical care and research and in basic neuroscience research. There are 78 faculty members including 66 clinical faculty, 28 residents, 6 clinical fellows, and over 100 administrative, clinical and research support staff. The Department of Neurology is a comprehensive department of clinical and basic neuroscience because of the presence of clinicians, clinician scientists, and basic scientists, with a strong focus on translation of research results into practice.

Our faculty and staff are committed to the complementary goals of:

  • Providing high quality neurological care for the people of Sacramento and Northern California.
  • Providing outstanding educational opportunities for medical students, residents, fellows, and practicing physicians.
  • Achieving new understanding of the nervous system and discovering better ways to diagnose, treat, cure, and comfort those with neurological disease.

Clinical faculty in the department provide instruction in the Neurology 420 course for second year medical students and the Neurology 450 clinical neurology clerkship, an elective for fourth year medical students. Eight neurology residents enter the program each year, and the program currently is approved for 32 residents. In July 2023, we welcome our inaugural class of residents into our 5-year ACGME accredited program in Child Neurology. The department's residency program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

During the past year, there were more than 16,000 patient visits to the outpatient neurology faculty practice at the UC Davis Health Neurosciences Clinic in Sacramento. In addition, Department of Neurology faculty members care for patients in the UC Davis Primary Care Network (a group of regional clinics), and at the VA Northern California Health Care System hospitals at Mather and Martinez.

Our faculty clinicians also provide expert neurological consultation for patients throughout Northern California via our expanding Teleneurology Service. In partnership with many regional health care providers, this innovative service enables patients to visit UC Davis neurologists via live, secure, internet video transmission at a growing number of sites, including French Camp, Lodi, Placerville, Redding, Tahoe Forest, Ridgecrest and Yreka.

Departmental research faculty are affiliated with the Institute for Pediatric Regenerative Medicine at the Shriners Hospital for Children Northern California, the UC Davis MIND Institute, the UC Davis Center for Mind and Brain, and the UC Davis Institute for Regenerative Cures. Several faculty members are affiliated with the UC Davis Center for Neuroscience, located adjacent to the main UC Davis campus in Davis, about 25 minutes from Sacramento.
