One of America's best hospitals, and No. 1 in Sacramento
UC Davis Medical Center ranked as one of the nation’s best hospitals for 2016-17 in 10 adult medical specialties, according the annual U.S. News and World Report Best Hospitals survey published in July 2016.
The annual ranking analyzes nearly 5,000 hospitals and recognizes those that excel in treating patients with the most serious and challenging injuries and illnesses. UC Davis ranked among the nation's top 50 in cancer care; cardiology and heart surgery; ear, nose and throat; geriatrics; gynecology; nephrology; neurology and neurosurgery; orthopaedics; pulmonology; and urology.
In regional rankings, UC Davis Medical Center was recognized as No. 1 in the Sacramento metropolitan area and fifth in California.
High performing in many common procedures and conditions
U.S. News and World Report also released ratings for common types of care, with UC Davis Medical Center rated as high performing in abdominal aortic aneurysm repair; chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or COPD; colon cancer surgery; heart failure; hip replacement; knee replacement; and lung cancer surgery. UC Davis was also designated as high performing in gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery in the medical specialties rankings. The hospital met expected standards of care for aortic valve surgery and heart bypass surgery.
Nation's highest recognition for nursing excellence
UC Davis Medical Center was granted Magnet® recognition by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) in early 2014. The designation is the nation’s highest form of recognition for nursing excellence and a benchmark for the quality of care patients receive.
Only about 7 percent of U.S. hospitals carry Magnet designation, which is valid for four years. UC Davis is the 25th organization in California and the only in Sacramento to earn the highly regarded recognition, developed to recognize health-care organizations for quality patient care, nursing excellence and innovations in professional nursing practices.
Among the nation's best children's hospitals
U.S. News and World Report ranked UC Davis Children's Hospital among the nation's top children's hospitals in five specialties in rankings released in June 2016. Together with Shriners Hospital for Children – Northern California, its longstanding partner in caring for children with burns, spinal cord injuries, urological issues and orthopaedic disorders, UC Davis Children's Hospital ranked 38th in orthopaedics and 32nd in urology. UC Davis Children's Hospital also ranked 19th in neonatology, 29th in diabetes and endocrinology and 43rd in nephrology.
Hospitals’ scores relied on patient outcomes and care-related resources each hospital makes available. The U.S. News Best Children's Hospital rankings help parents determine where to get the best medical care for their children. The rankings highlight the top 50 U.S. pediatric facilities in cancer, cardiology and heart surgery, diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology and GI surgery, neonatology, nephrology, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopedics, pulmonology and urology.
National Cancer Institute 'comprehensive' designation
UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center is one of only two such centers in Northern California that has earned National Cancer Institute (NCI) "comprehensive" designation. UC Davis is one of only 41 U.S. cancer centers to have earned the status, which signifies that it meets stringent criteria in the areas of laboratory, clinical and population-based research, professional and public education, and in dissemination of advances to the communities it serves.
The designation is the world’s most prestigious honor in oncology, reserved for less than 1 percent of cancer centers nationwide.
Autism center of excellence
UC Davis MIND Institute studies regularly appear in an annual list of the nation's top autism research achievements as compiled by Autism Speaks, the world’s largest autism advocacy and research organization.
The internationally known neurodevelopmental institute has also achieved status as one of nine National Institutes of Health-supported Autism Centers of Excellence and as a federally designated Center of Excellence in Developmental Disabilities.
Among America’s best medical and nursing schools
U.S. News and World Report ranks UC Davis School of Medicine among the best in the country. In its annual list of America’s best medical schools for 2018 the magazine ranked the school 45th for research, up from 47th in 2016. UC Davis ranked 18th among top schools for primary care training, up from 37th last year.
The annual listing appears on the publication's website and is published in its guidebook, Best Graduate Schools.
U.S. News also ranked the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at UC Davis as among the best in the country for master’s-degree nursing programs in its 2018 Best Graduate Schools listings. The publication ranks the UC Davis School of Nursing’s master’s-degree leadership program as 52nd, tied with three other programs.
Nationally known specialists
In an annual survey by Best Doctors, Inc., more than 90 UC Davis physicians representing dozens of specialties earned praise and recognition from their peers for being considered among the nation’s best. Only five percent of doctors in America earn the honor.
The Best Doctors in America® database contains more than 50,000 doctors, chosen through a peer-review survey that asks doctors to recommend others to whom they would personally refer.

Leader in Healthcare Equality
For the sixth consecutive year, UC Davis Medical Center has been recognized as a “Leader in LGBT Healthcare Equality” in the Healthcare Quality Index, an annual survey conducted by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation, the educational arm of the country’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization.
The award demonstrates commitment to equitable, inclusive care for LGBT patients and their families, who can face significant challenges in securing quality health care and respect.
A Women's Choice Award top hospital
UC Davis Medical Center received the 2016 Women's Choice Award as one of America's best hospitals for bariatric surgery, cancer and heart care. The designations represent hospitals that meet the high standards of the American College of Surgeons and American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery; are National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer centers; and perform well with regard to clinical measures and recommendation rates in heart care.
The award program is based on criteria that considers female perspectives on patient satisfaction, clinical excellence and hospital preference.
National honors for promoting diversity
UC Davis Medical Center received honors for promoting diversity in 2012 from the Institute for Diversity in Health Management, an affiliate of the American Hospital Association.
The institute recognized the hospital as "Best in Class" for its work in one of four categories assessed by the survey: Diversity Management and Strengthening the Workforce. Recognition for this category is based on hospitals' reported efforts to improve diversity management through efforts to recruit, retain and promote minority individuals within their workforce.
Excellence in Life Support Award
UC Davis Children's Hospital received the Excellence in Life Support Award from the international Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) for the hospital's Extracorporeal Life Support Program, which provides lifesaving support for failing organ systems in infants, children and, in some cases, adults. The award recognizes centers worldwide that demonstrate an exceptional commitment to evidence-based processes and quality measures, training, patient satisfaction and clinical care.
American Heart Association/American Stroke Association recognition
UC Davis Medical Center received a 2016 Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Gold-Plus Quality Achievement Award for using measures developed by the American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association to improve care and quality of life for stroke patients.
UC Davis earned the award for consistently adhering to association-backed, evidence-based guidelines that improve care and quality of life for stroke patients. The brain attacks are the fourth-leading cause of death in America and a leading cause of adult disability.
A Health Care’s Most Wired institution
For the sixth time in as many years, UC Davis Medical Center has earned the “Most Wired” designation as one of the nation’s top leaders in information technology. The 2016 award is based on a national survey conducted by Hospitals & Health Networks magazine, a publication of the American Hospital Association.
UC Davis is one of just 17 institutions in California to receive the "Most Wired" award this year. The honor will be formally presented at the annual Health Forum and American Hospital Association Leadership Summit on July 17-19 in San Diego.
A Most Connected Hospital
UC Davis Medical Center was recognized as one of the “Most Connected Hospitals” for 2015-16 by U.S. News & World Report. The list recognizes hospitals whose excellence in patient safety, patient engagement and clinical connectedness improves patient care. The distinction was given to only 159 hospitals around the country, including just 10 in California.
UC Davis Medical Center earned the 2013 Enterprise HIMSS Davies Award of Excellence for using electronic health records to successfully improve health-care delivery processes and patient safety while achieving a demonstrated return on investment.
Listed among 100 Great Hospitals in America
Becker’s Hospital Review has named UC Davis Medical Center to its 2016 list of 100 Great Hospitals in America. The monthly publication, which offers business and legal news and analysis related to hospitals and health systems, conducted research and examined several reputable hospital ranking sources, such as U.S. News & World Report, Healthgrades, Truven Health Analytics, The Leapfrog Group and Magnet designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
As part of the criteria for designation as a great hospital, Becker’s said that hospitals like UC Davis Medical Center are home to many medical and scientific breakthroughs, provide best-in-class patient care and serve as a research hub or as an anchor of wellness for their communities.
Patient-centered primary care
All 18 UC Davis Medical Group primary care clinics have been formally designated as Patient-Centered Medical Homes, an approach to primary care that uses a physician-led team to deliver coordinated, high-quality care aided by technology to connect team members and patients. The clinics received the three-year designation in July 2014 from the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA).
Medical homes emphasize shared decisions to help patients to make informed choices and receive better results. They also stress strong communication and coordination of care among all of a patient’s health-care providers, and offer patients better access through expanded hours and online communication.
Advanced primary stroke center
UC Davis Medical Center has been certified as an advanced primary stroke center by The Joint Commission. The Joint Commission's Primary Stroke Center Certification program was developed in 2003 in collaboration with the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association and is based on Brain Attack Coalition recommendations.
Clinical Center of Excellence in Pain Management
The American Pain Society selected the UC Davis Center for Pain Medicine as a 2015 Clinical Center of Excellence — the highest recognition that a pain center can receive nationally. The award recognizes pain-care teams that provide exemplary care for those with chronic pain disorders and acute pain after surgery or trauma, as well for people in palliative care settings who face pain from cancer and other terminal conditions. UC Davis also earned the honor in 2010.
Excellence award for intensive-care unit
A major nursing organization, the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN), conferred an award for excellence on UC Davis Medical Center's Medical Surgical Intensive Care Unit (MSICU), a specialized environment for critically ill medical/surgical patients. The silver-level Beacon Award for Excellence recognizes unit caregivers who successfully improve patient outcomes and align practices with AACN standards for a healthy work environment.
Leading-edge provider of care in vascular and vein medicine
The UC Davis Vascular Center's vein program has been accredited by the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC) for the evaluation and treatment of venous disorders. At the time of awarding UC Davis was only the second vein program in California to carry the rare accreditation, which signifies that UC Davis provides care for varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency in accordance with national standards and benchmarks.
One of America's most customer-friendly hospitals
UC Davis Medical Center has been designated as a Top 10 Hospital in America for Service Excellence by the American Alliance of Healthcare Providers, signifying it as one of America's most customer-friendly hospitals. The award is designed to find customer-friendly hospitals based either on an extensive application process or by a secret review of a facility's public communication and staff interaction with customers.
Environmental excellence award
UC Davis Health System received a 2012 "Partner for Change" Award from Practice Greenhealth, the nation's premier membership organization for health-care facilities committed to environmentally responsible operations. The award is one of the organization's Environmental Excellence Awards given each year to honor outstanding environmental achievements in the health-care sector.
Best medical center by the Russian-speaking community
UC Davis Medical Center was honored as “The Best Medical Center of Northern California by the Russian-Speaking Community” in the annual “Best of the Best” contest by Sacramento-based ANONS Russian-Speaking Community Newspaper. Russian is one of the top three non-English languages spoken by patients at the medical center, and is the second most-requested language of the hospital’s translators.
Spirit of Excellence Award for Service
UC Davis Health System received the annual Spirit of Excellence Award for Service from Modern Healthcare magazine for its innovative “patient-centered medical home” approach designed to improve the patient experience.
The program, in place in the health system's family and community medicine department, emphasizes freeing medical assistants from clerical duties so they can be more patient-focused, The medical home also features team huddles to discuss patients’ specific needs prior to their visit.
Huntington's Disease Center of Excellence
The Huntington's Disease Society of America named UC Davis a Center of Excellence for Family Services and Research, recognizing its expertise in clinical care for Huntington's disease patients. UC Davis has held the distinction since 2001.
The UC Davis Huntington’s Disease Center has also been acknowledged as a Level 1 Huntington’s Disease Center of Excellence by the Huntington’s Disease Society of America. The acknowledgement recognizes the center’s service to over 300 families coping with the disease and its plan to provide services to underserved families coping with Huntington’s who are affiliated with Kaiser Permanente in Northern California.
Meets the highest quality standards for cancer care
UC Davis Oncology & Hematology and Comprehensive Cancer Center is recognized by the Quality Oncology Practice Initiative (QOPI®) Certification Program, an affiliate of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). The certification is specific to oncology practice at the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center in meeting national guidelines for high quality oncology care. The QOPI® Certification Program certifies oncology practices that meet the highest quality standards for cancer care. UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center is among the first to become certified in Northern California. There are 286 QOPI certified practices in the US, and only 15 in California.
Breast Imaging Center of Excellence
The American College of Radiology highlighted the breadth and quality of the UC Davis Health System’s breast imaging services by awarding designation as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence in 2008. The title was bestowed to recognize the center's accreditation in all areas of breast imaging, including mammography, ultrasound and stereotactic biopsy.
Outstanding dedication to educational partnerships
For exposing students to opportunities in the health-care professions, UC Davis Health System received the Outstanding Dedication to Educational Partnerships Award from Sacramento-based Linking Education to Economic Development or L.E.E.D.
The nonprofit promotes partnerships between business, labor, education and government, such as these examples involving the Health System:
- Lead sponsorship of the Sacramento High School of Math, Engineering and Health Science, offering speakers, hospital tours, mentorship and job shadowing opportunities;
- CURE High School Research Academy partnership with St. Hope Public Schools, exposing students to cancer science, medical technologies and scientific research;
- Member of the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine, offering pre-medical education for high school students;
- Participation in Saturday Academy, where students from the UC Davis School of Medicine introduce groups of teenagers to what amounts to a condensed version of medical school.
Top 50 Most Social Media Friendly Hospital
UC Davis Medical Center was ranked among the nation's Top 50 Most Social Media Friendly Hospitals in a 2013 ranking of hospitals nationwide. Scores are based on the number of followers and amount of activity on each social platform, including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Linkedin, Pinterest, Google+ and Flickr. Comprehensive Education Institute for virtual care
The UC Davis Center for Virtual Care has been accredited as a Comprehensive Education Institute by the American College of Surgeons — an honor bestowed on only a handful of simulation centers worldwide.
The accreditation acknowledges the center for offering exceptional educational opportunities that allow health professionals to maintain their skills and explore new procedures and technologies. The center's patient-simulation and advanced robotics technologies create a virtual hospital environment, giving health professionals the opportunity to practice new invasive procedures and emergency medicine interventions before they treat patients.
