Nutrition training within the U.C. Davis Gastroenterology Training Program.

Gastroenterology/Hepatology fellows have the opportunity to spend 6 months in a combined Nutrition/Gastroenterology outpatient clinic that meets weekly under the direction of Dr. Charles H. Halsted, Professor of Internal Medicine and Nutrition. The focus of this clinic is the evaluation and management of patients with  gastrointestinal diseases related to nutrition. There referrals typically include patients with intestinal disorders such as celiac disease, surgically induced short bowel syndrome secondary to diverse  causes, post-gastric bypass surgery, and inflammatory bowel disease. The fellows specifically obtain training in the  evaluation of chronic diarrhea, intestinal malabsorption syndromes, and nutritional deficiencies related to severe obesity, gastric bypass surgery, and inflammatory bowel disease, as well as treatment approaches of specialized diets, enteric feeding, and home total parenteral nutrition. Dr. Halsted is ABIM certified in Gastroenterology and in clinical nutrition by the American Board of Nutrition, and is an American Gastroenterological Association Fellow.
