The UC Davis Hospice Program is part of We Honor Veterans, a national organization that addresses the unique needs of America's veterans, their families and community organizations.

We Honor Veterans is a program of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization in collaboration with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The program invites hospices, state hospice organizations, hospice-veteran partnerships and VA facilities to participate in the program focused on respectful inquiry, compassionate listening, and grateful acknowledgement.

As part of We Honor Veterans, UC Davis Hospice staff and volunteers completed an educational program and are providing workshops to VA and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) groups. The highlight of the program is the We Honor Veterans pinning ceremony. These ceremonies, conducted by veteran volunteers and staff, acknowledge each veteran on hospice for their commitment to their country. The pinning ceremonies are often the last opportunity for veterans to receive thanks and gratitude for their service. Veteran volunteer Randy Kanouse has been coordinating these ceremonies for UC Davis Hospice since 2012.

There are more than 17 million veterans in the United States. As the nation honors veterans for their military services each year on Veteran’s Day (November 11th), We Honor Veterans emphasizes the importance of recognition and compassionate care at the end of life's journey.

How to help

Volunteer support

Volunteer support is an essential part of the hospice program. Volunteers provide companionship, caregiver relief, practical services and spiritual support. The UC Davis Hospice Program is a member of the Sacramento Hospice Consortium, which provides hospice volunteer education and training at different times throughout the year. For more information about becoming a volunteer with the UC Davis Hospice program, please visit https://health.ucdavis.edu/homecare/hospice/volunteer.html or call the UC Davis Hospice office at 916-734-2458 and ask to speak with the Hospice Volunteer Coordinator.

Philanthropic support

Donations are used to provide end-of-life care to terminally ill patients who otherwise would not receive care, and to assist with other patient needs.

Donor gifts provide access to hospice benefits, counseling for grieving families, in-home nursing support, Thanksgiving dinners, staff education, payment of utility bills and other items not covered by insurance, and additional support programs for patients and families.

Donations to the Hospice Memorial Fund may be made online, via check, money order, major credit card or payroll deduction. All gifts are tax deductible.
