Bonnie Raingruber, R.N., Ph.D.

Bonnie Raingruber, R.N., Ph.D.

Bonnie Raingruber, R.N., Ph.D. began her appointment in the Center for Nursing Research in January, 2000. She is a child/adolescent mental health clinical specialist who is a member of the content expert committee for the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Dr. Raingruber received her master’s degree in mental health and her PhD in nursing from the University of California, San Francisco where she was awarded the dissertation of the year. She has been a nurse manager, a psychiatric nurse, a home health nurse, a Professor of Nursing, and a nurse researcher. She teaches classes at UC Davis on getting published and grant writing in addition to coordinating the research mentorship program.

She is on the editorial boards of Nursing Research, Journal of Nursing Education Scholarship and Qualitative Health Research. Dr. Raingruber has recently published a book titled “Health Promotion: The Foundation of Nursing Practice” by Jones and Bartlett in addition to an earlier book that focused on developing critical thinking skills in new nurses. She is the author of 6 book chapters and 30 peer reviewed journal articles which have been cited by more than 150 other authors.

Dr. Raingruber is a reviewer for a number of federal grant programs and has been the primary investigator on a variety of grants. Her recent funding is from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Association for a study of the effectiveness of a peer mentorship program in promoting continuity of care among mental health clients being discharged from an emergency room. She has received Department of Education funding for a physical education and obesity prevention program in an elementary school and National Institute of Child Health and Human Development funding for an intervention to treat adolescent obesity. She also received funding from the Health Resources and Services Administration for a nurse residency program for new graduate nurses. In addition, she has been funded for studies focusing on secondary trauma, nurse-patient ratios, and interdisciplinary practice. Dr. Raingruber is an expert in qualitative research, survey research, quantitative research, and grant writing.
