Research Interests

The thalamocortical system deals with sensory information relaying and processing in the brain. Dr. Liu is interested in investigating the underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms for sensory transmission in the central nervous system. His research projects mainly focus on two parts:

  1. Synaptic organization of the thalamic circuitry using immunocytochemical labeling combined with high resolution electron microscopy to reveal neurotransmitters and their receptors at cellular and synaptic levels in the thalamic neuronal circuitry which is critical for sensory information processing in the brain.
  2. Developmental plasticity of the thalamocortical system using axonal tracing combined with other techniques to reveal changes in receptor proteins or related molecules at synapses during cortical and thalamic development and examine the defects in certain gene knockout animals
