UC Davis partnership with The Effort provides care for Oak Park children

Children in Sacramento gained a new resource for pediatric care in December, when UC Davis Children’s Hospital began partnering with the non profit social services agency The Effort to provide health-care services for children and youth at its Oak Park center.
The pediatric clinic is staffed by two UC Davis pediatricians, Richard Pan, an associate professor of pediatrics, and assistant professor of pediatrics Erik Fernandez y Garcia, who deliver care two half days a week. But Pan said that the program is slated to expand and to have resident pediatricians seeing patients, as well.
“I think it’s very important that we provide access to care to children who may be disadvantaged or uninsured,” Pan said. “We’re excited to be able to integrate UC Davis Children’s Hospital’s medical care services with the mental health services and dental services available through The Effort in Oak Park. This partnership also offers a wonderful opportunity for resident physicians to understand the challenges that people who are uninsured or in safety-net programs like Medicaid experience in gaining access to health care.”
The Effort is a non profit, community-based agency that provides services to children and adults at several locations throughout Sacramento, including downtown at 18th and J streets, in Del Paso Heights, Oak Park and South Sacramento. The Effort provides a range of services, including substance abuse and detox services, mental health services and medical care. The organization also provides services at the Salvation Army and the Sacramento County Boy’s Ranch.
Diane Oran, the clinic manager at The Effort’s Oak Park Community Health Center, said that about a quarter of the center’s 1,000 clients are children or youth.
“I think it’s very exciting that the patients in the Oak Park area have the opportunity be seen by the UC Davis doctors and residents,” Oran said. “Their expertise in cutting-edge practices really will benefit our patients.”
The Effort does not turn anyone away because of a lack of ability to pay or health insurance, Oran said. The clinic is located at 3415 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Potential patients may call 916-233-4910 to make an appointment.
