DeCarli
joins Department of Neurology
Charles DeCarli
joined the Department of Neurology as an associate professor
in September. DeCarli earned his medical degree at George
Washington University in Washington, D.C. in 1982. He was
board-certified in neurology and psychiatry in 1991.
DeCarli has a
strong interest in behavioral neurology, with specific emphasis
on dementing disorders, including degenerative dementias such
as Alzheimers disease and frontal dementias. He also
focuses on dementias related to movement disorders and vascular
disease as well as cognitive impairment after closed head
injury.
DeCarlis
research interests are divided into two areas: using neuroimaging
techniques to understand the relation between brain structure
and function with aging and disease, and studying the role
of brain anti-oxidant systems, primarily quinone oxidoreductase,
on the pathophysiology and potential treatment of Alzheimers
disease.
DeCarli has published
extensively in his field and holds a patent for his method
of quantification of brain volumes from magnetic resonance
images. He is a member of the American Academy of Neurology,
Society for Neuroscience, American Association for the Advancement
of Science, and American Medical EEG Association. He also
serves as an ad hoc reviewer for numerous publications, including
the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry
and the Journal of Neuroscience Methods.
