To improve security on the UC Davis Medical Center campus, the locks on all exterior doors that use keys are being changed to a restricted key. The restricted keys will not be issued to staff. After the conversion is completed, staff members will no longer be able to gain access to buildings through a door with a key only. Access to buildings will be possible via card keys.
“Campus security is important, not only on a day-to-day basis, but also during emergencies, when building access needs to be limited or controlled,” said Dan Stratman, security and emergency preparedness administrator for UC Davis Health System.
In the initial phase of the conversion, crews are concentrating on inpatient and clinic buildings. The switches in the Cypress Building and the main hospital are near completion. Buildings under construction will comply with the new standard.
Many buildings on the medical center campus already have doors on the card-key system. However, Stratman said, these doors occasionally are propped open to maintain unrestricted access, and he encourages staff not to engage in this practice, as it undermines the health system’s security measures.
Health system officials are developing a new policy concerning ongoing efforts to improve building and campus security. |
