Satellite bookstore in Ellison Building focuses on wellness, chronic conditions

A small, satellite bookstore with a focus on improving wellness and managing chronic conditions is being piloted in the Ellison Building.

The Chronic Disease Management Center, the Department of Family and Community Medicine, and the UC Davis Bookstore are partners in the project, which is intended to serve patients, their families, employees and members of the community by providing a convenient focal point for wellness resources and activities. Initially, the store will offer books, magazines and sundries. Doctors and other health-care providers will review materials and be able to make specific recommendations to their patients.

Among the self-management subjects to be carried by the bookstore are obesity, smoking, nutrition, stress management, exercise and caregiver issues. The bookstore will have materials on chronic conditions such as diabetes, congestive heart failure, arthritis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder, depression and pain.

Although the resources often will be available in the bookstore’s modest inventory, books may be ordered for home delivery. In addition, materials from the UC Davis Bookstore on Stockton Boulevard will be delivered to the Ellison Building in one day.

In the second phase of the Ellison Building bookstore’s development, it will offer mini-lectures, access to Internet health resources, contact information for patient and employee support groups, health class schedules, and listings of current research studies. The new bookstore is seeking volunteers to help with the development of this latter phase.

The Ellison Building bookstore is located on the first floor, near the cafeteria.
