To acknowledge its private donors, the Department of Ophthalmology last week dedicated a donor recognition wall that lists the names of its major donors.
The wall, which faces the reception desk in the ophthalmology clinic’s main waiting room in the Ellison Building, is intended to acknowledge major gifts, including those made annually, by bequest or trust, by wills, and directed to the department’s Eye Center capital fund campaign.
“We are deeply grateful for the wonderful contribution that our grateful patients and donors make to our department work, and to the advances in ophthalmology we are achieving,” said Mark Mannis, chair of the department.
Only 6 percent of the department’s operating budget comes from state funds, while the remainder must come from its clinic revenue, grants and private gifts, Mannis said.
”It is important that we demonstrate our gratitude for their support,” Mannis said. “Only through their generosity can we achieve our goals in patient care, research and teaching.”
One of the department’s earliest residents, Sacramento ophthalmologist Michael Schermer, and his wife, Shelly, made a $150,000 donation and, as a result, the department has named the clinic’s main waiting room the Henry Berg Ophthalmology Foyer in honor of Shelly Schermer’s late father. The Schermers attended last week’s dedication ceremony. |
