Peter Agre, second from left, the winner of the 2003 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, spoke to a standing-room only crowd of scientists, physicians and students on the Davis campus on Wednesday about his work on aquaporins, which regulate and facilitate the movement of water molecules through cell membranes throughout the body. The lecture was part of the first annual Joseph Silva Jr. Basic Science Lectureship series. Standing with Agre are, from left, A. Hari Reddi, professor of orthopaedics; Claire Pomeroy, dean of the UC Davis School of Medicine; and Virginia Hinshaw, UC Davis Provost.
