Crime bulletin: robbery at gunpoint near UC Davis Medical Center

A medical student recently was robbed at gunpoint while walking to her car one evening near UC Davis Medical Center.

The robbery occurred near the corner of San Jose and Second Avenue when the two men approached the female student, brandished a handgun and demanded money. The men took the student’s cell phone and rummaged through her backpack, then told her to leave. Although the student reported hearing a single gun shot as she was leaving, she was unharmed.

The suspects were described as two African American males, 16-17 years old, 5-4, 130 pounds, wearing gloves, black ski masks, black hooded sweatshirts and black pants. The Sacramento Police Department is investigating.

The UC Davis Police Department encourages all students, staff and faculty to take the following precautions when arriving at or leaving the medical center, especially when it is dark:

  • It is safest to walk with another person.
  • Be alert to your surroundings and, if you see a suspicious person or situation, go to a populated area or building, and call the police as soon as possible.
  • Be alert to descriptions of people and vehicles that seem out of place, and obtain license numbers if possible.

The department has Protective Service officers who can provide an escort. The Medical Center Safety Escort Service provides safety escorts to students, staff, faculty and visitors between medical center sites and nearby residential areas. The service operates 24-hours-a-day during week-ends and holidays, and from 11:45 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Friday.

Emergencies

To report crimes in-progress, or police, fire or medical emergencies at the medical center, dial 9-1-1 from any medical center telephone, including pay phones. These calls will be directed to the UC Davis Police Department. Emergencies also can be reported by using one of the emergency yellow telephones located throughout facilities and parking areas.

At the medical center, callers need only to lift the receiver to be connected to a hospital operator. Even if a caller is unable to speak, the operator can locate the phone from which the call is originating and will call the UC Davis police dispatcher.

Non-emergencies

For non-emergency calls, call the UC Davis Police Department at (916) 734-2555. The police department station at the medical center is located in Lot 7, adjacent to the emergency room.
