| Benefactor of UC Davis Cancer Center finalist in “Today”
show search
Robyn Raphael, a Roseville woman whose non-profit organization
named for her deceased son raises money for pediatric cancer
research at UC Davis Cancer Center, is a finalist in a search
by NBC’s “Today” show and Royal Caribbean
International for Godmother of the world’s largest cruise
ship.
Historically, the “Godmother” designation is
an honor reserved for heads of state, politicians and celebrities
as a way to give ships their names and service as guiding
spirits. Other Royal Caribbean Godmothers include Queen Sonja
of Norway, Roslynn Carter, Lauren Bacall and Whoopi Goldberg.
Through its partnership with the “Today” show,
Royal Caribbean now is seeking to honor all adults by searching
for an outstanding individual – someone who has demonstrated
exceptional spirit, courage and integrity – to serve
as the Godmother of Freedom of the Seas. The winner will receive
from Royal Caribbean one cruise per year for life.
Robyn and Kyle Raphael established the Keaton Raphael Memorial
in 1998 to raise money for pediatric cancer research and to
support area families facing a childhood cancer diagnosis.
Over the past seven years, the organization has raised more
than $500,000, including $118,000 for pediatric research and
programs at UC Davis. In addition, it has distributed $20,000
in grants to 80 area families. The grants help cover the many
treatment-related costs not paid for by insurance, such as
transportation, babysitting for siblings and short-term housing
near the hospital during a child’s hospitalization.
Last October, Robyn Raphael donated $50,000 for an indoor
play area at UC Davis Cancer Center. Keaton Raphael was treated
for cancer at UC Davis.
People will be able to vote in the search for Godmother
of Freedom of the Seas during the week of Jan. 16-20 at www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10838113/.
