Scholarships, loans available for allied health professions

Applications are being accepted for scholarships and loans from UC Davis Health System employees committed to pursuing careers in one of several allied health professions.

Training and Development has a limited number of applications for scholarships and loans available from the Health Careers Foundation. Since 1990, the foundation has helped more than 4,500 students become health-care professionals. The HCF focuses on “nontraditional” students – adults entering the work force or changing careers to better provide for their families and communities.

Through scholarships and low-interest loans, HCF fills the funding gap created by a decrease in available educational dollars. This is especially important for nontraditional students, whose financial aid options are limited. All scholarship/loan awards consist of one-half scholarship and one-half loan.

Fields of study that are eligible for this program are:

  • Dietetics
  • Nursing
  • Radiological Sciences
  • Medical Records/Transcription/Coding
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Respiratory Therapy
  • Pharmacy
  • Speech Pathology
  • Medical Technology
  • Physical Therapy

Applicants must be enrolled or plan to enroll in a course of study leading to one of the following: certificate, diploma, license, associate or bachelor’s degree at an accredited two or four year college, university, vocational/technical school, nursing school, or an institution accredited by an appropriate state licensing health career board.

The course of study must be a program which, upon completion, provides the individual with the basic requirements for an entry-level position in the appropriate field. Advanced degrees are not eligible unless they are required in order to enter and practice in the profession (i.e., speech pathology, physical therapy, etc.). No correspondence programs are eligible for this program.

A recipient of the Health Careers Foundation scholarship/loan is one with a strong desire to excel in a health-care field. Each applicant’s academic record, statement of goals, work experience and program completion date are reviewed and considered during the selection process.

Health Careers Foundation was established in 1990 by Health Services Corporation of America, a national leader in health-care purchasing and the National Healthcare Coalition, an organization composed of CEOs who represent major health-care systems and hospitals throughout the country.

Health Careers Foundation is an independent not-for-profit, public foundation. Its 15-member Board of Directors, who have a wide and diverse background in the health-care industry, shapes the direction of Health Careers Foundation.

To be considered, applicants must complete an original application (copies will NOT be accepted) and submit it with a current official transcript to Training and Development, Ticon III, Room 2600. Applications must be submitted no later than 5 p.m., Wednesday, March 22, 2006. Late applications will not be accepted. For more information, contact Therese Maxwell at (916) 734-2676.
