Stepping into the future with support

“Tomorrow I officially start my first day of medical school at UC Davis. This scholarship has served as a reminder that I am not alone in this journey and that I represent much more than myself. I represent medicine, my new UCDSOM family, countless patients, my community, my family, friends, and mentors. I will remember these things throughout my medical education, career, and to become the best physician I can possibly become.”

These words, shared by freshman medical student and 2016 Alumni Association Scholarship recipient, Jose Acosta, exemplify the validation and support that scholarships provide.

Since 1988 the UC Davis School of Medicine Alumni Association has awarded several highly deserving medical students with surprise scholarships. The fund continues to provide meaningful support to students today thanks to the generosity and vision of alumni donors. This year, nine admirable first-year medical students were presented with surprise scholarships of $5,000 each at the Alumni Association Welcome Reception for the Class of 2020.

These students’ narratives each uniquely reflect academic and personal fortitude and a tremendous commitment to achieving personal and professional excellence in the face of formidable challenge. In fact, for many, the difficulties they faced inspired in them a desire to make great use of their futures to help others.

The fund has also provided alumni an opportunity be part of this important moment in the students’ lives and to extend the hand of mentorship and solidarity to these future physicians. As one alumni donor, Elizabeth Sammond, M.D., shared, “I feel contributing to the medical school scholarship fund is fundamental in helping the next generation of aspiring physicians and leaders. I am extremely fortunate to be in my position and to be able to help in some small way those students interested in this career path. Many of us need some type of help with our education at some point in our lives and I hope my donations make a difference in their lives.”
