Announcement of the John Marco Henderson Medical Student Scholarship

John Chuck (UC Davis Medical Center ’89) and Serotonin Surge Charities endowed the John Marco Henderson Medical Student Scholarship at UC Davis School of Medicine with a portion of proceeds from the 18th Annual Serotonin Surge Golf Tournament held in September.

John Marco Henderson, youngest son of UC Davis Health System professors Mark Henderson and Helen Chew, died at age seven in a tragic ski accident a few days before Christmas 2011. Since his death, John’s family has worked to improve ski resort safety practices for children.

The North Davis Elementary second grader loved to tell jokes, read about science, draw pictures, build with Legos, and watch the stars. The John Henderson Memorial Scholarship will be given to a medical student who has overcome adversity or loss and dedicates him or herself – with John’s sense of curiosity and adventure – to improving the lives of others.

Chuck, a physician at Kaiser-Permanente and longtime volunteer with the UC Davis School of Medicine Alumni Association, founded the nonprofit Serotonin Surge Charities to fundraise for health-care related causes such as safety net health clinics, breast cancer research and scholarship funds. The inaugural award will be presented in 2015 and has been funded by Mark and Helen.
