Higher diabetes risk in HIV-positive children

Children infected with HIV and who were beginning or switching to highly active antiretroviral therapy showed an increase in insulin resistance, potentially raising their risk of developing diabetes later in life, according to a study led by Caroline Chantry, associate professor of Pediatrics. Despite contrary results in adults, average cholesterol profiles in young children with HIV do not worsen when they are put on the therapy but only when certain combinations of drugs are used. The study was published in Pediatrics online.
