Newborn fragile X screening

 "" PHOTO —
"" ""

The first widespread newborn screening for the genetic mutation that results in fragile X syndrome, the single most common inherited cause of mental retardation, is under way at UC Davis M.I.N.D. Institute. Using a test developed at the institute, researchers, led by principal investigator Randi Hagerman, who holds an endowed chair in fragile X research, will screen as many as 30,000 infants during the next five years as part of a $2.3 million pilot study. The initial project lays the groundwork for universal newborn screening of all infants in the United States for the fragile X mutation in which early identification can lead to early interventions.
