It is imperative that our children – our future – grow up healthy so they can realize their dreams.
Yet, many challenges continue to hinder the health of young people today in the United States. In the U.S., a baby is born at low birth weight every 2 minutes, a baby dies before his or her first birthday every 18 minutes, and a child or teen dies from an accident every 44 minutes. Tragically, a child is confirmed as abused or neglected every 35 seconds, and killed by that abuse or neglect every 6 hours.
As health-care professionals and as a society, we must do all that we can to ensure our children grow up to be happy and productive adults.
Fortunately, an impressive cadre of innovative and passionate experts at UC Davis has dedicated their careers to ensuring our children grow up healthy and prepared to take on the challenges of tomorrow.
Our medical students work with teenagers from across our diverse community to support them in choosing a career in health care. Our pediatric residents partner with neighborhoods and schools to encourage children to make healthy choices when they eat and exercise.
Researchers at our world-renowned M.I.N.D. Institute study autism and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder to increase understanding of how neurodevelopmental deficits occur. We are helping to ensure safer passage through adolescence by discovering effective treatments for teens at risk for mental illness. Our experts also are developing new interventions to educate young adults on how to protect themselves from dating violence and alcohol abuse.
Our patient-care team at the Children's Hospital brings the most advanced treatments to the youngest patients. For example, our pediatric heart surgeon performs delicate procedures on the tiniest of hearts so that babies can thrive. Our neonatologists are using an innovative cooling treatment to help at-risk newborns recover from brain trauma.
We also share the world of children's health with strategic partners, such as Shriners Hospitals for Children Northern California, to expand our reach and our knowledge.
Thus, in many ways every day, the UC Davis Health System team brings new hope and new caring to children from across our community.
Children's health is a priority for us, and our society. As Marian Wright Edelman, founder of the Children's Defense Fund put it, "if we don't stand up for children, then we don't stand for much." At UC Davis Health System, we believe that the greatness of a society is measured by how we treat the youngest and most vulnerable.
We remain steadfast in our commitment to enable the children of today to contribute to the communities of tomorrow. By doing so, our bold vision will truly foster a bright future.
