UC Davis School of Medicine is honoring three alumni, a medical resident and a fellow in 2009 for their contributions to the field of medicine and service to the university and the communities it serves.
2009 Clinical Fellow Professionalism Award
Aubrey Yao, M.D.
The School of Medicine Alumni Association has named Aubrey Yao the winner of the 2009 Clinical Fellow Professionalism Award. Yao is completing a cardiothoracic anesthesiology fellowship in the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine.
"Receiving this award is quite humbling because there are certainly others who better exemplify the qualities embodied by this award," Yao says.
Co-workers, nursing staff members, medical technicians, students and ancillary staff members, who were eligible to submit nominations for the award, thought otherwise, as did Peter Moore, department chair.
"Aubrey is an absolutely superb physician, colleague and human being. He has a quiet dignity about him that reflects on those [around him] and with his patients as he goes about his duties. Aubrey is valued for his commitment to excellence in patient care. He is truly a role model for his peers," Moore said in his nomination of Yao.
Yao, who will complete his fellowship at the end of June, plans to specialize in cardiothoracic anesthesiology. He says that his interest in the life sciences and in helping fellow human beings attracted him to the medical field
"One insight I've gained during the fellowship is the significant role of practicing physicians in the scientific advancement of the field," says Yao, who was raised in St. Louis and served his residency at UC Davis. "The team I've worked with during the fellowship is composed of a very diverse group of individuals, and I see almost on a daily basis the importance of professionalism, and how it can directly impact patient care."
The award recognizes residents who exhibit attributes of professionalism as defined by the American Board of Internal Medicine, encompassing aspiration to altruism, accountability, excellence, duty, service, honor, integrity and respect for others. Yao received the award and a nominal cash prize at the Senior Faculty Banquet on June 4.
